The posts in this blog focus primarily upon specifications of earth moving equipment used in high pressure gas pipeline construction and the parts / spares compulsory keeping these machines in true functioning order which are subjected to severest bashing of the elements including work in environmental extremes of temperature ranging from 0° to 52° Celsius, extreme slopes crossing the psychological threshold of 35°, service in muddy, marshy, water logged areas, deserts and salt plains.

Daewoo / Doosan Solar 220LC-V Track Type Excavators; Parts Lists

Daewoo and Doosan, 200W, 220, 225, 140 and now the 300 ones with LC-V designations, which to my understanding means Long Crawler version 5 are always known to me by the amazing ability of their operators to pass through all what is thrown on to them by taming this wonderful workhorse.

I will talk about Daewoo / Doosan Solar220LC-V track type excavators now.

I have seen these machines going through the toughest of extremes. It is a very reliable and tough apparatus comprising of powerful hydraulics, sturdy undercarriages and uncompromising electronics circuitry. I have seen these machines doing marvels with the bucket as well as hydraulic jack hammer tools. These machines were first put to real test  in my organization when employed to lay a 30 inch diameter high pressure gas transmission pipeline in the one of the toughest regions of Pakistan i.e., in the SALT RANGE between KHEWRA and CHOA SAIDEN SHAH. I have seen machine operators dropping buckets on rocks in rather desperate attempts to clear out the trenches being dug for the huge gas pipeline. Rocky Slopes of over and above 35 degree angle were traversed and cleared out by these mighty crawlers in days and hours. Anyhow the project was completed in record time.

In yet another test these crawlers were sent on to conquer the MURREE hills, a famous hill resort in Pakistan located at roughly 60 kilometers away from the capital ISLAMABAD. This project was envisaged to transmit natural gas via a 12 inch diameter 56 km long high pressure pipeline to save greenlings of the recipient area which is losing its virginity day by day by the hands of timber and now the land mafia. Anyhow, the terrain was softer as compared to the one encountered in the salt range but slopes were even steeper with very few approach roads resulting in daily crawls averaging more than 10 kilometers. This project lasted for almost 10 months however, the harsher winter of Murree hills didn’t cast a shadow on the daily chores of excavator operators who used to confine themselves in the rather cozier controlled climate of the heated cabins. The watchmen who used to spend their nights with these machines found much relief and security in the cabins when they were confronted with the fearsome leopards during the chilly winter season.

Later on these machines were again utilized for trench excavation in Haripur – Abbotabad Region in order to lay a 16 inch diameter high pressure gas pipeline.

The gigantic trial came when these aging excavators were faced with hard rocky topography of SHAKKARDARRA, LACHI, HANGU and DARRA ADAM KHEL areas of NWFP. By this time these machines have completed 5000-6000 hours of work. Amazingly, no major breakdowns were encountered apart from occasional hydraulic oil leakages from hydraulic jacks which too were due to overloaded work described above.

I have tabulated a list of Spares required for the undercarriage, engine, hydraulic system, and electrical system below which are meant for covering the major overhauls of these machines which are still plying in field construction camps.

Undercarriages of these machines are a master piece as their durability can be easily compared to that of Caterpillar Machines, a leader (perhaps) in the field of construction when comparing longevity among the peers. Older Daewoo machines had track link assemblies and track shoes with Daewoo as a brand embossed over those, but I have seen Hyundai Steel Stickers on the track shoes of newer Doosan track type excavators. I would suggest people to refurbish track link assemblies by exchanging the Pins and Bushes instead of replacing those assemblies only if the cost of doing so is half of that required for buying track link assemblies.

Engines powering these machines are another stunning success. Forget any troubles or breakdowns if you are using a Daewoo or Doosan Engine. To me unstained crank shafts have been a guarantee when dismantling such engines after 5000 – 6000 working hours accomplished in places mentioned above with less than mediocre maintenance. Do invest on one to two crankshafts, a cylinder block, an oil cooler and a few turbochargers if you are maintaining ten to fifteen such machines as contingency to avoid sudden breakdowns which though I haven’t encountered during my half decade acquaintance with these diggers. Radiators are another such sparkler to be collected if your machines have operated in areas with only salty waters available for replenishing the cooling system.

I believe these machines have very sturdy hydraulics. Though I have heard about Kawasaki brand Main Pumps and Travel Motors a lot. Earlier Daewoo machines featured a troublesome travel reduction gear which used to breakdown on extensive crawls. The fault generally began from disintegration of needle bearings which then played havoc with the cams operating within the travel reduction mechanism. However, Daewoo / Doosan have now rectified this defect by introducing a relatively older but well-built design which was once employed in DH220LC model. Doosan is now employing hydraulic components from TONGMYUNG under the label of DOOSAN MOTTROL in almost all of its machines.

EPOS-V an Engine Power Optimization System version Five is what has made these machines formidable. I have never seen these electronic gadgetries going off the grid unless handled with extreme slackness. One such instance is when a machine was stuck in some canal near SHEIKHUPURA and water soaked all of its sensitive electronic chips. However, amazingly the machine kept working on manual mode where only engine RPM had to be adjusted through a choke handle available in the engine compartment for the next one year till the availability of the required electronic magic box named EPOS-V Controller. It is to be noted that these machines cannot operate properly without batteries installed and any attempt to boost start these machines with 36V or 48V may burn down the electronic wizardry.
